Niijima, the World's Newest Island

A thousand kilometers south of Tokyo in the Ogasawara Islands, an eruption in November gave birth to this lovely little baby. The Japanese press has dubbed it Niijima.

So far it is 14 acres (5.5 hectares) and growing, and although most new islands quickly disappear, Japanese scientists think this one may be around for a while.
