Just one feature left to dig at our site in Delaware, so we sent most of the crew on to the next project. Today there were only three of us on the site. We were all working in this well, down deep enough that the wooden lining has been preserved by the nearly constant moisture. Here Jason scrapes soil away from the remains of boards along the north side.
A formal photo showing how the lining was built, with posts in the corners supporting the boards on the sides. This well was built around 1770 and filled in around 1820.
The artifacts are getting fewer and farther between, but there is still some good stuff, like this sherd of a pearlware mug.
