How Old Is the Domesticated Dog?

This skull from the Altai region of Siberia is one of the oldest known domestic dogs, dated to about 33,000 years ago. A just-published analysis of its DNA says that even at that distant date its genes were more like those of a modern dog than they were like a wolf, implying that domestication took place thousands of years earlier.
