The Power of Earthquakes

The results of post-earthquake satellite mapping in Nepal:
According to the early analysis, a region 75 miles (120 kilometers) long by 30 miles (50 km) wide lifted upward by as much as 3 feet during the earthquake.
No wonder so many buildings fell down.

This reminds me of the extraordinary power of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake that caused Japan's great tsunami:
The earthquake moved Honshu (the main island of Japan) 2.4 m (8 ft) to the east.
