Cutting the grass this afternoon my son Robert heard squeaking, looked down and found this baby bunny lying on the ground.
We brought it inside for a bit.
But eventually we found its den and returned it to sleep beside its sibling. This looks just like the other rabbit nests I have found around the yard -- not really a burrow, just a sort of nook covered over with grass. The eastern cottontail seems to be comfortable nesting right out in the open, no need to hide away under bushes or anything. Still, this is right in the part of the yard where we play soccer and frisbee, and within reach of the dog's chain, so I think this mother did not choose very wisely. We'll see what happens.
