Back in 1962, Corning developed a super strong form of glass for which they could not find a commercial purpose. Now it is in high demand for the screens of high-end smart phones and flat screen tvs, and they hope that it will soon be a multi-billion dollar product.
I love it when things developed for no good reason become useful and important. The sort of glass used to make fiber optic cable was also developed decades before anyone found a use for it.
Maybe some day they will find a use for one of their new discoveries, the super thin sheets of flexible glass shown in the picture above.
