Americans Don't Hate Immigrants
Listening to what makes the news, you might think that Americans are up in arms about illegal immigration and want stricter policies. But this is not so. As the latest Pew poll shows, 72% of Americans favor allowing employed immigrants to become legal residents. I am somewhat baffled that this position, which is shared by many prominent business leaders, George W. Bush, most Democrats, and even half of "staunch conservative Republicans," seems to have no political force behind it. I suppose that those opposed must care a lot more than most of those who are for, but there still seems to me to be an opening here for a pro-immigrant Presidential candidate to get a lot of support.
