London's Burning

Yesterday the City of London commemorated the Great Fire of 1666 by setting fire to a 400-foot long model of the 17th-century city, installed on barges along the waterfront.

The model was designed by American artist David Best, based on contemporary engravings.

Famous map showing the burned area, and detail. The fire burned for four days and consumed 13,000 buildings, 87 churches, and the cathedral, but it burned rather slowly, so there were very few deaths.
