The Warren Cup
The Warren Cup was kept in the British Museum basement for decades because it was "too shocking" to display in public. Found in Syria or Palestine and made within a few decades of AD 1, it depicts scenes of homosexual sex. By ancient standards it is not particularly graphic, but the subject was just too horrid for the tastes of the mid 20th century. Not any more, though, and the cup is being loaned to the University of Notthingham to go on display as part of an exhibit about Roman sexuality.
