Francisque Joseph Duret, Chactas Meditating on Atala’s Tomb, 1836
Chactas was a character from an 1801 novella by Chateaubriand. Chactas was a Natchez Indian who was caught up in various Indian wars, wars between whites and Indians, and other woes, and ended up falling in love with a half-Indian, half-white woman who had become a nun. As you can tell, it didn't end well.
