Puzzled by Solar Boats

With great fanfare, a boat called the SolarPlanet is about to attempt to circumnavigate the world using renewable power.

Like, great, but didn't Magellan and Juan Elcano already do that 490 years ago?

What advantage does a solar boat that can only go 13kph have over a sailing ship?

Couldn't somebody have found a better use for the expertise in solar power and batteries that went into designing this bizarre and thoroughly useless craft?
