Filoli

Nice slide show at Smithsonian Magazine of the gardens at Filoli, a splendid relic of Gilded Age San Francisco.

I love garden gates through which hidden wonders can be glimpsed.

I still have a picture over my desk of the gate to the sculpture garden at Yale, near scull and bones. It was my favorite place on campus. I'm trying to figure out how to get a garden gate into our suburban square back yard.

All the gardens of my imagination are divided by hedges and walls, with gates between.
