Russian archaeologists, led by Leonid Yablonsky,
have announced the excavation this summer of a spectacular Sarmatian tomb dating to around 500 BCE.
The Sarmatians were a group of nomads who vied with the Scythians for control of the Russian and Ukrainian steppes in the first millennium BCE. The new tomb, obviously of a royal or noble woman, produced more than a thousand artifacts, including the amazing silver mirror at the top of the post.
Earring.
Gold plaque showing a panther attacking an antelope.
