If you asked me without any context to describe how the figures appear, "in mourning" would not have been it. Is it just the fact that these were found in a tomb that leads to them being ascribed a character of mourning?
To be fair, I suppose there are many types of mourning, and certainly in history there have been traditions and rituals and whatnot that I find utterly baffling... so perhaps it's just me.
