As geologists learn more about volcanoes, they are starting to issue disturbing predictions about future eruptions. Alwyn Scarf, author of
Vesuvius: a Biography,
estimates that Vesuvius will erupt again between 2023 and 2064, that it will be a major eruption, and that, given the rising population density around the mountain, “over half a million people could be in grave danger of succumbing to a horrible death. . . . Russian roulette is not a game that volcanoes usually lose.”
Update: It may be even worse than that. One of the commenters to a
Discovery piece about Vesuvius posted this:
Vesuvius will explode very soon, I had a warning dream about it just on May 20th 2010. It will kill over million of people. It is too bad I cannot tell the exact date. Sorry.
