Some Ukrainian commentators have called the war currently unfolding, even if it continues to new phases with intermittent pauses, the final victory of Kievan Rus against both Muscovy and the legacy of the Golden Horde. Some really long historical shadows being cast.

Meanwhile, not a lot of people asking for comment from the indigenous Finnic peoples that were conquered / displaced / destroyed by the Varangian invaders. If you're going to squabble about "legacy" and "who was here first", then neither Kiev nor Moscow have any grounds to claim anything.
