Nice graphic from Pew showing how family size is shrinking in America. It compares the families of women who are now 40-44 with those who were 40-44 in 1976. Two children is increasingly the norm, but there is much diversity.
This is of course related to the number of mothers working.

I imagine it's also related to the increased cost of raising a child.
