I read once that as his armored vehicle crossed into Iraq, in March 2003, General David Petraeus turned to the reporter sitting next to him and said, "Tell me how this ends."
I imagine Russian officers doing the same thing today.

I have a hard time imagining any Russian general not being quite confident of victory over Ukraine, given all of Ukraine's major disadvantages fighting alone.
As we found out in Afghanistan, 'winning' the war and winning the war are two different things.
