Deities

Sometimes I wonder how accurate our assessments of historical things really are.

I mean, sure - these carved faces might very well depict deities. But what if they actually just depict some local wealthy and influential family? Or maybe something as mundane as a town council or village elders?

If archeologists of a distant post-collapse future found Mount Rushmore in isolation, surely they too would leap to the conclusion that it was depicting ancient deities? After all, why else would people go to all the effort of carving giant faces into a mountainside? Who could inspire such an act without being a major religious figure?
