A huge hole has appeared in Indian Ocean weather forecasts because ships are avoiding the area threatened by Somali pirates. Scientists tried to rely on buoys instead but the pirates vandalized them, perhaps thinking they were spy devices. So forecasters now have next to no surface data on a huge area off Somalia.
