This nineteenth-century slave cabin on Edisto Island, South Carolian, was donated to the Smithsonian, which plans to take it to Washington and install it in an exhibit on slavery and freedom. It looks to me like a pretty typical example.
I remember as a child and teenager (1950's) driving in the family car to "the South" from Philly.
This was pre-I-95, so we drove down 301.
And we drove past cabins just like the one pictured, only there were people still living in them. I still have vivid mind-pictures because I was so shocked, being used to either brick row houses or traditional suburban ranch homes on green swards.
