Oof, the skewed perspective here legitimately makes my head hurt.

Hmm. Looking at a sampling of his other works, they seem to be very hit and miss. Some of them have fine perspective, others unfortunately induce mild vertigo.

I had wondered if perhaps this was an early work, but no - it's actually very close to his death. And the others don't seem to follow any particularly strong pattern either. It just seems to be random chance whether he lands the perspective or not.
