Kaizou Ji Temple, Japan

The small Japanese city of Kamakura is full of wonderful medieval temples.

This is because it was for a while the home base of the Shoguns who ruled Japan, beginning with Minamoto Yoritomo (above) in 1192-1199. Their rule is called the Kamakura Shogunate. Besides being military men, they promoted Nichiren Buddhism, a school recently arrived from China. Their power ended in 1333.

There are five famous temples in Kamakura and others besides. Kaizou Ji is one of the smaller ones, most famous for its garden. It was founded in the 13th century but I can't find out very much else about it. Except that it is lovely.
