From what I understand this wasn't just a mistake in the sense of someone fell asleep at the wheel - this was the result of powerful winds, acting on a staggeringly gigantic ship with massive surfaces for that wind to find purchase on, which also possesses utterly insane inertia and cannot be stopped or steered easily or quickly.
That said, one wishes we as a species would have globalized the Suez by now and pooled our resources to widen and improve it to prevent exactly these kinds of problems, given the waterway's massive global importance.
