A Roman Tin Ship Found Off Brittany

Divers have been exploring a Roman shipwreck near Île de Batz – an island off Finistère at the very end of the Breton peninsula. The wreck dates to the third or fourth century CE. Besides lots of Roman pottery, the main find has been hundreds of ingots of tin.

Some of the ingots are stamped with marks, including this M. The tin probably came from Cornwall, but that will soon be checked using elemental analysis. After all, they have plenty of tin to work with.
