John Moyr Smith was an Arts and Crafts Movement designer born in Glasgow in 1839. He designed an enormous number of stove tiles that were produced by Minton in the 1870s. I learned about these from Spitalfields Life, who blogs about life in London's East End. Above, King Canute and the Waves.
There are several different series: these are the arrival of Julius Caesar in Britain and the wounding of King Harold at Hastings from the British History series.
The Fox and the Goat in the Well, from Aesop's Fables.
Hamlet, from the Shakespeare series.
Geraint rescues Enid, from the Idylls of the King.
Rumpelstiltskin, from the Brothers Grimm.
Bluebeard.
Edward the Martyr. Another reason to wish I had fireplace.
