A Master-Key to the Rich Ladies Treasury, 1742

This remarkable document is a sort of fortune-hunter's guide to the wealthy heiresses and widows of London; a sample page is below. Thanks to the wonders of Google Books, you can peruse it online. I find it interesting that the ages of these women are not listed. If she's got 20,000 pounds, who cares? I am reminded of a story I read about a wealthy planter with two single daughters who lived near Fredericksburg, Virginia, in territory crisscrossed by Civil War armies. Numerous cavalry officers from both North and South came to call, because the daughters were "accomplished women with a pretty fortune."
