From a new exhibit "exploring the conceptual process" of my favorite contemporary artist, Andy Goldsworthy: Hand hit site dust, Presidio Spire, October 2008.
I have to say that I would rather leave his "conceptual process" as a black box and just enjoy the results. It seems to me that his best work is what he just does, in a way that seems largely improvisional: smacking the dust, sticking leaves to sticks, turing icicles sideways. The "installations" he has been putting into major museums since he got famous don't move me in the same way.
