Some time Monday, after days in the ICU drinking only water, my nurse brought me a cup of ginger ale over ice. It tasted like heaven, the first real physical pleasure I had experinced since my surgery three days before.
And this set me thinking on what a huge part of human culture is devoted to making good things to drink. We have enormous global cultures built around tea and coffee, Europe's passionate attachment to wine and beer, and in the modern world a riotous explosion of drinks, from sophisticate cocktails to sweet sodas; Coca-Cola is the largest private employer in Africa.
We humans love a tasty drink.
