Rocks, Ferns, and Moss

This morning we took the hike up Beech Mountain. My favorite part of this hike is the valley on the far side of the mountain, with its spectacular display of rocks covered with ferns, moss, and lichens. This was a cloudy day, threatening rain, so it was dark in the woods, but these pictures give some sense of what the place is like.

I love the cool lushness of this valley, and the gray strength of the stone.

The paths through these rocks are an invitation to adventure, so I scrambled up over them and found little caves and hidden nooks higher up the slopes.

I love this place, and I could never get tired of exploring these valleys.
