People have been carving things on rock for a long time, for many different reasons. In one part of Pakistan, which has been intensely explored because it may soon disappear under the waters of a dam, carvings illustrate the art of the region from early Neolithic times (above) to the Bronze Age (below) to the heyday of Buddhism in the 1st millennium AD (bottom).
