My readers may remember
the remarkable apology offered by prosecutor Marty Stroud after a man he convicted was exonerated. That experience and others, he wrote, had turned him against the death penalty. The
Shreveport Times asked one of Caddo Parish's current prosecutors about Stroud's apology,
and he said,
I’m a believer that the death penalty serves society’s interest in revenge. I think we need to kill more people.
Meanwhile the count of death row prisoners exonerated by the Innocence Project is now up to 152.
Revenge is never justice - even when it is enacted via law.
