Storytelling in Japanese Art

The Metropolitan has a new exhibit of Japanese illustrations, from the 13th to the 19th century, and the Times has a slide show. Above, an illustration from one of the 13th-century ink-painted hand scrolls known as the “Illustrated Legends of the Kitano Tenjin Shrine.”

Another picture from the same document.

From a nineteenth-century scroll titled The Night Parade of 100 Demons.
