Maine 2023

I'm on Mount Desert Island, staying at a wonderful house rented by my sister. This is the view from the front porch on Sunday evening.

My two younger children are here with me; the older ones were busy with their own lives. Here they work on skipping rocks, which they have finally mastered.

Sea lavender near the house.

View from Acadia "Mountain," a 700-foot hill with a wonderful view across Somes Sound toward the Atlantic.

On the way down from Acadia Mountain you can detour to the mouth of Man-O-War Brook, so called because sailing ships sent boats to this spot to refill their water barrels from this little waterfall. My son is trying to get the sailor's experience.

Today we hiked up Beech "Mountain," an even smaller hill with another great view.

The trail down from Beech Mountain passes through my favorite place on Mt. Desert, a valley of rocks covered with moss and ferns. Which has the worst light for photography anywhere I have tried to take photographs, either twilight dark or intense light and dark shadows. One would need a good camera and a tripod to capture the scene.

This is my best effort from this trip, a bit of fern in an even patch of shade.

My daughter and I take pictures of each other.

It makes me happy to be here.
