I was asked recently why I link to more videos these days. The answer is very simple: because everything else is behind paywalls. Many of the people whose blogs I used to read have moved to Substack and started charging for access. Almost all online newspapers now have paywalls, as do almost all journals. So I am increasingly limited to a few retirees (Kevin Drum, Noah Smith), The Guardian, and YouTube. When the internet was young there were lots of schemes for ad-funded content, but they all either failed or went to a clickbait model in which you have to fight past dozens of extremely annoying ads for one paragraph of content. Except on YouTube.
