Catoctin Mountain

I spent a rare day in the field today, up on Catoctin Mountain where they are going to repave a historic road through a park.

Ancient oak tree that was growing at the edge of a cleared pasture, with stone wall nearby.

Pre-Civil War road marker, 10 MI TO AMMITS TOWN.

I was tasked to pay particular attention to the places where culverts run under the road, since they are being replaced and this will involve more digging than just repaving the road will. I thought it would be a pain to find them all, but it turned out to be ridiculously easy. The snow had mostly melted off the road but not above the pipes running under it, and all the culverts were marked with bold white stripes.

  1. I went to seminary in Emmitsburg - is that possibly the "Ammits Town" on the marker?
