The "Alfred Jewel," depicting Alfred the Great of England, now in the
Ashmolean Museum. The inscription says AELFRED MEC HEHT GEWYRCAN – 'Alfred ordered me to be made’, and the consensus is that this is an authentic artifact of the reign of Alfred (871-899 AD).
Then there is this "Alfred Jewel," which the
Metropolitan Museum in New York used to display as an authentic artifact of Alfred's reign but now believes is a nineteenth-century fake. Not a bad copy!
