Today's Place to Daydream about: Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia surrounds an amazing series of interlinked lakes connected by waterfalls.

This is karst topography, where the water is supersaturated with calcium carbonate. The cascades between the lakes are flowing over limestone dams, which are actively being built taller; some are growing at a centimeter a year.

There is also an extensive cave system.

The chemical composition of the water varies, and as a result the sixteen lakes have distinctive colors.

The water is clear and full of fish.

The park surrounding the lakes measures 73,000 acres (300 square km), and the wildlife includes brown bears, wolves, lynx, and capercallie.

But it's really the waterfalls that draw people.
