Today's Place to Daydream About: Kakadu National Park, Australia

Kakadu National Park is in Australia's Northern Territories. It measures nearly 100 by 200 kilometers, (60 by 125 miles) making it about the size of Slovenia.

At the Kakadu Escarpment the dry hill country of Australia's interior tumbles down to the vast estuary of the Alligator Rivers, so the park contains several distinct ecosystems.

The great estuary is full of wildlife: giant saltwater crocodiles, spectacular birds, fish with strange Australian names, plus beautiful lotuses.

In the hill country are wallabies, frilled lizards, and other Australian things.

During the rainy season the streams from the interior form spectacular waterfalls as they pour down over the escarpment to the low country.

Kakadu is an important site of Aboriginal settlement and has been for at least 20,000 years. It includes several famous rock art sites, open to the public.

It just seems like a very Australian sort of place, full of billabongs, kookaburras, dingoes, and so on -- the Australian parts of the Crocodile Dundee movies were filmed there.

It looks amazing, and I wish I were headed there next week.
