Images from Flickr's antiquities project; I believe most of these are in the National Museum in Naples. All are stone except for the last, which is ivory.
What I have always loved about Roman portrait sculpture is its realism (which did vary from Republican to Empire periods).
There is a head in the Met. Museum in NYC of a young bearded man that could easily have been the portrait of another young man from NYC or north Jersey who sang with several amateur DooWop groups in the '90's.
So many of them look like people I have met one place or another! No idealized images here! There are big noses, wens on chins, sticking-out ears, etc.
Thank you for these people whom I'd not seen before.
