History and Nationalism

Ernst Renan:
Forgetting history or even getting it wrong is one of the major elements in building a nation. . . . history is a danger to nationalism.

I regard it as the primary duty of modern historians to be such a danger.

  1. *A* danger, sure; the logic seems solid. But is it importantly dangerous to nationalism? I doubt it, given nationalism's close affiliation with confirmation bias (see wikipedia Confirmation_bias).
