Kay Sekimachi, Skeletal Leaf Cups

Kay Sekimachi is a California-based artist, born 1926. While she was attending the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, in the 1940s, she took to heart a lesson from her teacher Trude Guermon-prez: “Try to make something with the simplest of means.” She has spent much of her career working with humble materials: woolen yarn, nylon thread, coarse earthenware, wasps' nests, leaves. These leaf bowls are recent works, made in 2012.
