Five months into his war against the Islamic State, President Obama has finally decided to seek the authorization from Congress that the War Powers Act requires him to seek within 60 days. Nice of him. Honestly I don't think he would have bothered except that he hopes this way to set some limits on his successor.
But given how atrocious the record of the whole government has been on these matters since 9-11, I guess this counts as progress.
The authorization of force Obama wants sets limits on the number of ground troops that can be sent, which I think is a good thing, but on the other hand it has loopholes that would allow him to bomb just about anybody and send special forces all over the world to attack “associated persons or forces.”
Senator Paul, can you come up with some amendments?
