In Seattle, a giant tunnel-boring machine named Bertha was gnawing its way along the route of a new highway tunnel under the waterfront when it struck -- something. Nobody knows what, only that it is hard enough to stop the machine. Engineers call it "the object."
They say it is probably a giant boulder, but then they would, wouldn't they?
