A Boy and His Atom

IBM researchers have been dreaming up new ways to show off their ability to manipulate individual atoms with the scanning tunneling microscope. This is the latest, a silly little animated video. Each dot you see is a single carbon atom.

The ripples are distortions created in the underlying copper plate by the electrical properties of the atoms.
