Early Birds had Four Wings

Studies of well-preserved bird fossils from the amazing limestone beds of northeastern China show that the earliest birds had flight feathers on their feet as well as their wings. Not clearly yet how they used those extra feathers -- steering? -- but since modern birds do without them, they ended up not being crucial for flight.
