In Apulia, archaeologists
have excavated what seems to be the cemetery of an estate and tile works operated by slaves of the emperor. Examination of 100 skeletons from the cemetery at Vagnari shows that they were quite well fed, with none of the telltale signs of malnutrition. Indeed they seem to have been better fed than the Roman norm. Of course this tells you nothing about slaves anywhere else, but it is still interesting.
