Romanesque Capitals

One of the best things to happen in Europe when classical civilization collapsed was the end of the Doric-Ionic-Corinthian tyranny and the freeing of sculptors to carve columns and capitals however they wanted. Some of the wonderful and weird results are shown here. Above, from the Basilica of San Isidoro in Leon.

St. Sernin, Toulouse.

Cantebury Cathedral, Crypt.

Spieskappel, Hesse.

Hildesheim, Saxony.

Goslar, Saxony.

Quedlinburg.

Sainte-Pierre, Chauvigny.

Monastery of Santo Domingo, Silos.
