Art critic Robert Hughes has died at 74. Hughes made my list of favorite insults when he said that Jeff Koons "has done for narcissism what Michael Milken did for the junk bond." He also once wrote something that I found very interesting about the critic's profession, which I can't find and therefore will try to produce from memory:
Everybody's a critic, they say. But to be a critic is actually very hard. The critic has to approach each new work with an open mind; form an opinion about it; and express that opinion in a way that will be interesting or useful to other lovers of art.
