Marc Quinn's Iris Paintings

Marc Quinn's Iris paintings started with a series that were actually portraits. Each of the first group was based on a very-much enlarged photograph of the sitter's eye. They were done with an airbrush, which gives them a slightly blurry effect when viewed up close. These first paintings, done in 2009, were all 2.0 meters across (6 feet 6 inches).

Since then Quinn has branched out and done further paintings in the same general format, but abandoning fidelity to real eyes for experimental renderings of the earth, the night sky, and abstract images.

I don't really know what to make of these. They are certainly interesting and original.

But are they any more than that? I don't know.
